Product Description

ACAR (Aluminum Conductor Alloy Reinforced) is a type of overhead electrical conductor consisting of a core made from high-strength aluminum alloy wires, surrounded by layers of concentric aluminum strands. This design provides enhanced mechanical strength while maintaining excellent electrical conductivity.

Application

ACAR conductors are widely used in overhead power transmission and distribution systems where high mechanical strength and excellent conductivity are required. Their reinforced aluminum alloy core provides superior tensile strength and reduced sag, making them ideal for long-span lines and areas with challenging environmental conditions such as high winds or elevated temperatures.

ACAR is commonly employed in urban and rural power networks, industrial power supply, and infrastructure projects where reliable performance and durability are critical. The conductor’s lightweight and corrosion-resistant properties also make it suitable for coastal and coastal-adjacent installations.

Applicable Standard

ASTM B 254/B254M, IEC60189

Construction

In general, the ACAR Conductor is constructed in the following structure:

  • Out Layer: Aluminum Wire 1350

FAQs

What is the difference between ACSR and ACAR conductors?

The primary difference lies in the reinforcement core material. ACSR (Aluminum Conductor Steel Reinforced) uses a central core of high-strength galvanized steel to provide maximum mechanical strength for ultra-long spans, river crossings, and heavy ice loads. ACAR (Aluminum Conductor Alloy Reinforced) replaces the steel core with a core of high-strength aluminum alloy strands (typically 6201-T81), surrounded by layers of EC-grade (1350) aluminum. This substitution eliminates bi-metallic galvanic corrosion and magnetic hysteresis/eddy current losses (reducing AC resistance). ACAR is lighter than ACSR (by 5-8%), offers superior corrosion resistance, and provides better ampacity under certain conditions due to lower electrical losses. However, ACSR remains the stronger option when absolute maximum tensile strength is required for extreme mechanical demands.

What grade is an Aluminium conductor?

Aluminum conductors are manufactured using specific standardized metal grades engineered for optimal electrical conductivity and mechanical strength:
1350-H19 (EC Grade): Commercially pure aluminum (minimum 99.5% purity) hard-drawn to H19 temper. It offers a minimum conductivity of 61% IACS and is used in AAC, ACSR, and ACAR outer strands.
6201-T81 Alloy Grade: A heat-treated aluminum-magnesium-silicon alloy temper. It provides 52.5% to 53% IACS conductivity with nearly double the tensile strength of 1350 aluminum, widely used in AAAC and ACAR cores.
1120 Alloy Grade: An intermediate aluminum alloy offering higher strength than 1350 while maintaining ~59% IACS conductivity.
These conductor grades comply with major global standards, including ASTM B230/B398, IEC 60889, and BS EN 50182.

What are the different types of aluminum conductors?

Aluminum conductors for overhead power transmission and distribution lines are categorized based on their material construction:
AAC (All Aluminum Conductor): 100% 1350 aluminum; best suited for short-span urban distribution networks.
AAAC (All Aluminum Alloy Conductor): 100% high-strength 6201 alloy; ideal for corrosive coastal and industrial areas.
ACSR (Aluminum Conductor Steel Reinforced): Aluminum strands over a central steel core; designed for long-span high-voltage transmission lines.
ACAR (Aluminum Conductor Alloy Reinforced): 1350 aluminum strands over a 6201 alloy core; balances high ampacity and light weight.
AACSR (Aluminum Alloy Conductor Steel Reinforced): Alloy strands over a steel core for extreme mechanical loads.
ACSR/AW: Features aluminum-clad steel core wires for enhanced corrosion protection.

What are the benefits of ACAR conductors?

Key operational and economic advantages of ACAR conductors include:
Superior Ampacity: Combining 1350 aluminum strands with a 6201 alloy core yields higher electrical conductivity and current capacity than ACSR of equivalent diameter.
Zero Magnetic Losses: Lacking a ferrous steel core, ACAR eliminates magnetic hysteresis power losses, reducing continuous line operating costs.
Enhanced Corrosion Resistance: 100% aluminum construction prevents internal galvanic action, making ACAR highly durable in marine and industrial environments.
High Strength-to-Weight Ratio: Provides greater tensile strength than AAC, allowing longer span distances and reduced line sag without the heavy weight of steel.

What is the lifespan of ACAR conductor?

Under standard operating conditions, the expected service lifespan of an ACAR conductor is typically 40 to 60 years.
Key factors contributing to ACAR’s exceptional durability include:
Homogeneous Construction: Because both the outer strands (1350) and core strands (6201 alloy) are aluminum-based, ACAR is immune to internal galvanic corrosion between dissimilar metals.
Environmental Resilience: Performs reliably in high-humidity, marine, and polluted industrial atmospheres without requiring internal grease coatings.
Vibration Resistance: Using proper preformed armor rods and vibration dampers prevents wind-induced fatigue and mechanical wear over decades of operation.
