Product Description

ACSR/AW(ACSR/AS),Aluminum Conductor, Aluminum-Clad Steel Reinforced is a concentric-lay-stranded conductor composed of a central aluminum-clad steel (AW) core, surrounded by one or more layers of hard-drawn aluminum strands. The AW core consists of a high-strength steel rod coated with a thick layer of pure aluminum, providing both excellent conductivity and corrosion resistance.

Application

ACSR/AW conductors are specifically engineered for use in overhead power transmission and distribution systems where high strength, durability, and corrosion resistance are critical. They are ideal for both new installations and upgrading existing lines.

Applicable Standard

ASTM B 549, AS/NZS3607, GB/T1179

Construction

In general, the ACSR/AW Conductor is constructed in the following structure:

  • Outer layer: Aluminum wire 1350
  • Center:Aluminum clad steel wire

FAQs

What are the benefits of ACSR conductors?

Key operational and economic benefits of ACSR conductors include:
Superior Mechanical Strength: Withstands heavy wind, ice loads, and extreme mechanical tension.
Reduced Infrastructure Cost: Greater tensile strength permits longer span distances, requiring fewer support towers per kilometer.
Proven Reliability: Globally recognized standardized specifications (e.g., Dog, Panther, Drake) simplify grid design and maintenance.
Versatile Configurations: Available in multiple aluminum-to-steel stranding ratios to match specific mechanical and electrical demands.

What is the insulation between aluminum and steel in ACSR conductors?

No electrical insulation is required between the aluminum and steel components in an ACSR conductor. The conductor is a bare, non-insulated product used for overhead lines. The aluminum and steel strands are in direct metallic contact. Since both are conductors and operate at the same electrical potential, there is no need for insulation between them. The primary purpose of the steel core is to provide mechanical strength, not to carry current, and its direct contact with the aluminum does not create an electrical problem in this application.

What is the difference between ACSR and ACSR AW?

The primary difference is the material of the steel core. A standard ACSR conductor uses a galvanized steel core for strength. An ACSR/AW (Aluminum Conductor, Aluminum-Clad Steel Reinforced) conductor is structurally identical but replaces the galvanized steel core with an aluminum-clad steel core. This substitution provides several advantages: ACSR/AW is lighter (3-6% less weight), has higher corrosion resistance, slightly greater ampacity, and less electrical power loss compared to standard ACSR. It is particularly suitable for coastal or heavily polluted areas.

What is the current carrying capacity of ACSR?

The current carrying capacity (ampacity) of ACSR (Aluminum Conductor Steel Reinforced) and ACSR/AW (Aluminum-Clad Steel) conductors is not a single fixed value. It varies significantly based on conductor size, core construction, and environmental conditions.
Key factors determining ACSR ampacity include:
Conductor Size (Cross-Sectional Area): Smaller standard sizes (e.g., 25–50 mm²) typically carry between 100 A and 200 A, while large overhead transmission conductors (e.g., 400–800 mm² or kcmil sizes like Drake and Cardinal) can carry over 800 A to 1,200 A+.
Operating Temperature: Ratings are standardly calculated at maximum continuous operating temperatures ranging from 75°C to 90°C.
Ambient Conditions: Local air temperature, wind velocity, and solar radiation directly influence heat dissipation and total current limits.
To determine exact current ratings for a specific installation, consult the product technical specification table matching your desired conductor code word or cross-sectional area.

What is the rate of ACSR conductor per km?

The price rate for ACSR conductors generally ranges from $500 to $12,000+ USD per kilometer, depending on the conductor size, stranding structure, and application:
Distribution Lines : ~$800 to $3,500 USD per km.
Transmission Lines : ~$6,000 to $15,000+ USD per km.
Key pricing factors include live LME aluminum/steel spot rates, anti-corrosion grease requirements, galvanized steel core class, and reel packaging types (wooden or steel drums).
