BS215 Part 2
BS EN50182
IEC60189

Product Description

The Aluminum Conductor Steel Reinforced (ACSR) is composed of a central core of galvanized steel wires—either solid or stranded
—surrounded by one or more layers of concentrically stranded aluminum wires. This structure combines the high conductivity of aluminum with the superior tensile strength of steel, making ACSR ideal for long-span overhead transmission and distribution lines.

Application

ACSR (Aluminum Conductor Steel Reinforced) conductors are widely used in long-distance electrical power transmission due to their excellent strength and conductivity, making them ideal for extended overhead line spans. In addition to power transmission, ACSR conductors are also commonly used as messenger wires to support overhead electrical cables in distribution systems.

Applicable Standard

BS215 Part 2,BS EN50182, IEC60189, ASTM B232/B232M, DIN 48204, AS3807,GOST 839, GB/T1179

Construction

In general, the ACSR Conductor is constructed in the following structure:

  • Out Layer: Hard Drawn Aluminum Wire
  • Center: Galvanized Steel Wire

FAQs

How to select ACSR conductor?

Selecting the right ACSR (Aluminum Conductor Steel Reinforced) conductor depends on several technical and environmental factors:
Current Carrying Capacity (Ampacity): Calculate maximum load current to choose the required aluminum cross-sectional area.
Mechanical Strength & Span Length: Match the steel core ratio (e.g., 6/1, 26/7, 54/7) to the mechanical tension and tower span requirements.
Operating Temperature: Evaluate maximum continuous operating thermal limits (typically 75°C to 90°C) to prevent excessive sag.
Environmental Exposure: Choose greased cores or aluminum-clad steel (ACSR/AW) for coastal or high-corrosion zones.
International Standards: Ensure compliance with global specs like ASTM B232, IEC 61089, or BS EN 50182.

Why is ACSR conductor used for overhead lines?

ACSR is the preferred choice for overhead lines due to its exceptional combination of properties. It merges the lightweight and high electrical conductivity of aluminum with the high tensile strength and ruggedness of a steel core. This unique design enables the conductor to handle higher line tensions, significantly reduce sag, and achieve much longer span lengths than most other conductors. Its favorable strength-to-weight ratio ensures dependable performance under adverse weather, making it economical and reliable for a wide range of transmission and distribution applications.

What is the difference between ACSR and AAAC?

The primary difference is in their construction. ACSR (Aluminum Conductor Steel Reinforced) consists of aluminum strands surrounding a central steel core for superior mechanical strength. AAAC (All Aluminum Alloy Conductor) is made entirely of high-strength aluminum alloy strands. Consequently, ACSR has higher tensile strength and is ideal for long-span, high-tension applications like river crossings. AAAC is lighter and offers better corrosion resistance, making it more suitable for coastal or humid environments. AAAC also has slightly better conductivity, but ACSR is generally preferred when maximum mechanical strength is required.

What is the lifespan of ACSR conductors?

Under standard operating conditions, the expected service lifespan of an ACSR conductor is typically 30 to 50 years.
Key factors influencing conductor longevity include:
Environmental Conditions: Coastal or industrial atmospheric pollution can accelerate galvanic corrosion between aluminum and steel cores.
Operating Temperatures: Continuous overheating beyond design thresholds degrades mechanical properties.
Vibration Management: Using appropriate stockbridge dampers prevents wind-induced fatigue damage over time.

What is the maximum temperature for ACSR?

The standard maximum continuous operating temperature for conventional ACSR conductors is 75°C (167°F) according to IEC and IEEE standards, though emergency operating limits may allow up to 90°C (194°F) for brief periods.
Exceeding these temperature limits causes thermal annealing (softening) of the hard-drawn aluminum wires, permanently reducing tensile strength and creating dangerous line sag. For applications requiring continuous operation above 100°C, high-temperature low-sag (HTLS) conductors are recommended.
